Memo to Establishment Candidates: Don’t be sore losers
By Tim Shoemaker
Remember back in March when Mitt Romney cautioned about "divide and fail" in regard to Tea Party candidates? If not, here's a reminder/summary of his thoughts from a Newsmax interview:
He cautions that if a conservative tea party candidate runs in a general election, that would siphon votes away from a Republican candidate, and "divide and fail is the result. "That would hand over the country to Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, and that would be very sad indeed." Romney hopes that tea party candidates will instead run in primaries, and if they lose will back the more conservative candidate in the general election. [emphasis added]
Well as more and more party establishment Republicans continue to fall primary after primary it seems the prudent course would be for some of them to heed Romney's "advice" to the Tea Party. It appears that incumbent Lisa Murkowski may lose her primary to Joe Miller, yet her campaign is threatening to perhaps even run as a third party or write-in candidate.
In Florida, we see a similar pattern, with establishment politician Charlie Crist switching parties to become an independent after it appeared he could not defeat Marco Rubio in the Republican primary.
So herein lies my message to the Republican Party establishment/incumbents: If you lose your primary, don't be a sore loser and run as a third party candidate in the election. After all, you'll just be playing the role of the despised spoiler and hand the election to Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Barack Obama.
